Wine

d'Arenberg 2008
The Wild Pixie

The 2008 d'Arenberg The Wild Pixie is a blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Roussanne aged for 12 months in mostly seasoned French oak. 2008 is the very first vintage of this exciting wine which blends one of the red variety stalwarts of McLaren Vale with an exciting white variety as is done in Hermitage. Taking a cue from the extremely popular d'Arenberg "Laughing Magpie" Shiraz-Viognier, this inaugural release of the "Wild Pixie" combines Shiraz with another Rhone white varietal, Rousanne. Opaque purple-colored, the Pixie offers up an enticing perfume of cedar, smoke, game, bacon, and blueberry. Like all of their wines, there is the classic d'Arenberg cloak of fine tannins that are seamlessly integrated with fine balance and length. Firm and flavorful on the palate, this savory, lengthy wine will evolve for the next 2-3 years. Rated 91 points by Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Rubicon Estate 2008

CASK Cabernet

Rubicon Estate's 2008 CASK Cabernet is Francis Ford Coppola's "baby Rubicon" sourced from the illustrious Inglenook vineyard in Napa Valley, paying tribute to John Daniel, Jr. and the Inglenook Cask wines that made this property legendary. For the 2008 vintage, very ripe fruit was picked in selective areas throughout the Estate to express a brighter ripe Cabernet style for CASK. In some cases, just the riper side of the vine was picked. The grapes were hand-picked, hand-sorted, and destemmed before being put in small fermenters where they were macerated for about 21 days. 16 months of French oak barrel aging in our caves allowed for a preponderance of roundness while preserving the fresh aspects of the grapes. Dark, ripe cherry is the predominant characteristic along with vanilla and hints of floral and spice notes. The mouthfeel is very rich and round with some sweet creaminess on the palate and a fresh fruit finish. Definitively not in the modern style of fat overripeness, but balanced and elegant. This amazing Cabernet shows all the hallmarks of an ageable wine, but you can certainly drink and enjoy it now. It only gets better as it sits in your glass and breathes.
